In 2014 I travelled to Ruse, on the border between Bulgaria and Romania, so see my brother. He had left his partner and was living rough on the bank of the River Danube, in winter, under an upturned boat. This week I remembered that visit and the worry about my brother during the very cold winter. He is a survivor and is tough so he lived through the winter without heating, being fed by friendly locals. In the spring of 2015 he travelled to England to visit me, then to Portugal to stay for a year with our mother.
He’s back in Bulgaria now, working with people and animals – with friends.
